Get up, stand up, Stand up for your rights. Get up, stand up, Don't give up the fight - Bob Marley (singer, songwriter)

This past Wednesday would have been Bob Marley's 73rd birthday.

Even if you're not a fan of reggae music you've probably heard of him. Born Robert Nesta Marley, Bob was a self taught musician, making his own instruments as a boy. It was the rocksteady style covers of popular songs he recorded with friend, Peter Tosh, not ska that gave them notoriety.
I shot the Sheriff, one of his best known songs is admittedly my least favorite but there is no way I can include the ones I love (A few included here). He was an ambassador of peace and tried to put opposing political parties together, the People's National Party (PNP) and the Jamaican Labour Party (JLP) with a concert but days before there was an attempt on his life. He survived  and performed with a bullet lodged in his arm. Bob died of cancer in 1981 at age 36, but there are still many debates and conspiracy theories regarding his cause of death, including the idea that a C.I.A. agent gave him a contaminated shoe with radioactive material.
He is more than a legend, he was a visionary of peace and love. He once said: My music will go on forever. Maybe it's a fool say that. but when me know facts me can say facts. My music will go on forever. If you ask me, he was right. His music is still played and loved by generations worldwide.
If you haven't seen the documentary Marley, take time to see it. Even if you think you know a lot about him, you'll learn something new. I thought I did but came away with new respect.
I'm also a fan of his children: Ziggy, Ky-Mani, Damian (Jr Gong), and Stephen. Each talented in his own right. I'm sure he's very proud.

  1. This is interesting. I'll learn more about him one day. I wasn't heavily into reggae much. When I see the red, yellow, & green I immediately think of him though; an odd truth.
